Students who finished early told me that the flyers I was going to hand out looked too white, so we painted them too! Students flung, splattered, and dripped their paint all over the white flyers. They LOVED it. I think I loved it too!!!
Today students in grade five reviewed what they learned about lines, patterns, and complimentary colours. Then we got straight to work on finishing our names! We used crayons to. Make patterns and lines, and then used watercolour to paint over them. This technique is called a resist. Students were so amazed when the aunt didn't stick to the crayons (wax and water don't mix!) They thought it was just amazing.

Grade six started printmaking today. Last week we used foam sheets to write our names backwards and then added a simple border. Today we started printing our names on practice sheets. Students really enjoyed inking up their foam 'plates' and seeing if their names would show up or not. Students had to experiment with how much ink to put on the plate, sometimes it was too much, and other times not enough! Once they got it just right they moved onto their final printing paper. We talked about complimentary colours and used them when choosing our printing colour. Some students finished and started on their sketchbook covers, others still need to print next week. No worries! Next week, everyone will finish printing, we'll add some small details with crayons and then we'll start a new project!! Students seem really excited about art this year-I hope this positive energy continues for a long time!!!!
Grade four finished their monsters today! We used watercolor paint and crayons to create scary (and sometimes cute!) monsters out of our names. We talked about contour lines and symmetry. They turned out really nice and the students were really excited to paint!
I almost forgot!!! The most exciting thing that came today was our sketchbooks! Hooray! Each student will have their own sketchbook to take notes, keep handouts, collect information and, of course, to sketch in. The students designed the back of their sketchbooks with their name and class, and then they could decorate it how they wished. Such a good start to the year, even though it's week three already!
Today was extremely exciting because our supplies for the art room came!! Both grade four and grade five helped to put the materials away and still managed to finish their first projects of the year!
Grade four finished their name monsters and hopefully will be on artsonia tomorrow (my iPhone is FULL of photos!) We talked about symmetry and contour lines. They worked really hard and some of them even made up stories to go along with their monster. As I always say, we do every subject in art class!! Grade five finished their name pattern pieces today using crayons and watercolour. They learnt about positive and negative space in their projects and focused on the negative space to fill it with patterns and different textures. Finally they traced their names in black permanent marker to make them stand out. They really turned out nicely and hopefully I now know everyone's name!!! :) The first two weeks of school have gone by so fast! I've sent out an art letter to all the parents (hopefully you've received it!) and the students have started their first projects. So far we're working with lines, patterns and colours. Really exciting! Some classes read the book called 'The Dot' and made their own dots to start off the year. We learned to 'just make a mark and see where it takes you!' Some classes are working on 'Name Monsters', others are working on using positive and negative space in their names to create interesting patterns and other classes are starting printmaking (using the lines in their name). See a pattern here?!
Here are a few photos of this past week in particular and I hope to update more regularly once the school year has taken off and settled down a bit. :) |
