Last week was Halloween and in some Spanish cultures, that means Dia de Los Muertos! Dia de Los Muertos, or, The Day of the Dead, is a happy holiday which celebrates the passing of friends and family with yellow flowers, sugar skulls and remembering the dead with their favourite food and drink.

Grade two, Mrs.Chen's class, is learning about the colour wheel. We used coloured bottles of water to discover primary and secondary colours. Students really liked shaking the bottles of water to reveal what colours were in the bottles. Then, on the back of our sketchbooks, we painted the colour wheel so we wouldn't forget! Some students finished early ad insisted on making another "dot" painting. The first weeks of school we talked about a book called 'The Dot'. In it, a very frustrated girl didn't think she was a great artist, so her art teacher told her just to make a dot. Inspired by this dot, the little girl decided she could make much better dots than this, and made dots in all sorts of ways! The students loved making their own dots and whenever they are finished with their work, they insist on making more dot paintings. Fine by me!!!
Here is where I will give updates about class, post pictures and explain projects.
Recently, PR-4 have been exploring colour and shape. We looked at books by author and illustrator Eric Carle and watched a short video about how he makes his illustrations for his books. Students then painted papers like Eric Carle does, and then cut the papers into shapes to make their favourite animals! Students liked watching a real artist do his art and then making art just like Eric Carle. If you would like to see some of the art we have done for this project, please check out our school's artsonia website. Here, student artwork is published for every student after we have completed a project. Feel free to become a fan of our school or your student's artwork! |
