Welcome to The Art Room!
Welcome to the Shanghai United International School PuDong Campus Art blog!
Here, on the class blog, I will post what we are doing in each class, student work, pictures of students working in class, and little snips of what our class is like. Click "What's going on in class?!" to see what's been happening!
I hope to make art class a place where students can explore their creativity, become more independent thinkers, incorporate core subjects into art, and try to think outside the box. I truly believe that every child can be an amazing artist, they just need the encouragement and confidence to try. I have watched many students tell me that they cannot do art, that they are not good at art, and then watched their faces light up after they have successfully completed a project, and all they had to do was try!
Art is a very important part of children's development as well as the curriculum and I hope to encourage students and parents to see the value and importance of art in education.
"Students with four years of high school arts and music classes have higher SAT scores than students with one-half year or less." -americansforthearts.org, The College Board, 2010. 2010 College-Bound Seniors: Total Group Profile Report.
"Cognitive neuroscientists at seven major universities have found strong links between arts education and cognitive development (e.g. thinking, problem solving, concept understanding, information processing and overall intelligence.) According to the Dana Consortium study, Learning, Arts, and the Brain (2008) children motivated in the arts develop attention skills and memory retrieval that also apply to other subject areas." -americansforthearts.org
I hope you visit as frequently and as often as you'd like. Feel free to make comments or contact me with any questions you have about art class or art in general!
Thanks for your support for art in education,
-Ms. Tory
